Fougères sur Bièvre lies 20 kilometers south of Blois. Saint Eloi’s, with its three-light mullioned windo,w was built in the early 12th century (nave, vaulted apse and bell-tower) and completely reworked in the 16th century (southern aisle, northern seignorial chapel and southern stained glass window). The northern aisle, reconstruction of the vault and the western façade date from 1830).
Fougères sur Bièvre se trouve à 20 kilomètres au sud de Blois. L’église de Saint-Eloi, avec sa jolie façade percée d’une fenêtre à trois meneaux, date du début du XIIème siècle (nef, abside voûtée en cul de four et clocher) et fut profondément remaniée au XVIème siècle (bas-côté sud, chapelle seigneuriale nord et verrière sud). Le bas-côté nord, la reconstruction de la voûte et la façade ouest datent de 1830.

Slate Roofs – Toits en ardoise
All the roofs in the photo are slate, including those of Saint Nicolas‘ church on the right. Note the dormer windows which are mainly gable style.

Château de la Vicomté
Château de la Vicomté in Les Grouets, known in the 15th century, has survived to the present day without the slightest claim to fame, according to La Nouvelle République. That may be so, but I think it gives a certain distinction to the street where we live, Rue Basse des Grouets, and I love to see it at dusk when we go walking in the nearby woods.
Le château de la Vicomté aux Grouets connu au XVème a traversé le temps à l’écart de l’histoire, selon La Nouvelle République. Soit, mais elle donne un côté distingué à notre rue Basse des Grouets et j’aime bien le voir à la tombée du jour lorsque nous nous promenons dans les bois aux alentours.

The bell tower – Le clocher
I don’t know why this house in Rue Basse de Grouets has its own bell tower. It also has a very strange roof on the right cut out of the main roof which is made of slate.
Je ne sais pas pourquoi cette maison dans la rue Basse des Grouets possède son propre clocher. Elle a un drôle de toit en ardoise sur la droite qui fait un décroché.
The Louis XII fountain was reconstructed in 1511 by the distinguished engineer Pierre de Valence. Up until the 19th century, it was located at the corner of Saint Lubin and Bourgmoyen streets. However, when the houses behind it were destroyed to build the Louis XII square in 1820, it was transferred to the southern corner of the square which is why it looks a little out of place. After being damaged during the Revolution, it was restored in 1890.
La Fontaine Louis XII a été reconstruite vers 1511, par le maître fontainier, Pierre de Valence. Jusqu’au 19ème siècle, elle se trouvait adossée au mur des maisons à l’angle des rues Saint Lubin et Bourgmoyen. Lorsque les maisons ont été détruites pour construire la place Louis XII en 1820, elle a été installée à l’angle sud de la place ce qui explique pourquoi elle ne semble pas à sa place. Endommagée pendant la révolution, elle a été restaurée à partir de 1890.
I was not familiar with the term “degré” for “steps” until I came to Blois but the name is used for several staircases. Note the red and white bars under the name of the steps indicating that it is part of the French national hiking trail or “Grande Randonnée” often abbreviated to GR.
Je ne connaissais pas le terme “degré” pour “marche” avant d’aller à Blois mais il y a plusieurs escaliers appelés de cette façon. Notez que c’est également un chemin de Grande Randonnée.
