Snake’s Head Fritillaries in the Sun – Fritillaires pintades sous le soleil

Protected in numerous areas in France, the snake’s head fritillary [Frillaria meleagris], also called guinea flower and chequer lily, draws its name from the Latin fritillus, a dice tower, and various interpretations of its delicate pattern – snake’s head, guinea and chequer. It is found abundantly in March in natural wetlands such as the banks of the Loire between Saumur and Cunault where this photo was taken.
Protégée dans de nombreuses régions de France la fritillaire pintade [Fritillaria meleagris] tire son nom du latin fritillus (cornet pour jeter les dés) et de pintade pour la ressemblance au plumage. Très présente en mars dans les prairies naturelles humides et inondables comme les bords de Loire entre Saumur et Cunault où j’ai pris cette photo.

Correction: Elles sont magnifiques cette année, n’est-ce pas? Très abondantes après toute la pluie de cet hiver.
I had no idea they even existed. BTW, one of my lizard orchids is getting ready to the bloom. The only one with a flower though.
