What the Devil! – Au diable

photo_161_devil_lavardin
The first time we went to Lavardin, we couldn’t go into the Romanesque church of Saint Genest but this time it was open. It has a spectacular set of murals and two frescos. This panel has a phoenix in the centre (symbol of the resurrection); below is a pelican feeding its babies with its own flesh (symbol of Christ) and the Weighing of Souls by Saint Michael. On the upper level, an angel in a long brown robe with its wings unfurled, playing a viol, is taking the Chosen ones to Paradise. Peter is waiting for them at the door and has just let two other people in. Below, a big brown devil with bulging eyes and a belt of red flames is pushing the sinners towards another devil with a belt of yellow flames who takes them and throws them into hell symbolised by a huge cauldron. Two rows of faces grimacing with pain can be seen to emerge (on the next pillar, not visible).

Have you been to Lignières de Touraine? I think you would like it. Also Saint Savin. They are all about the same dates and stylistically similar. I’ve never visited Lavardin, but it’s on the list.

No, we havent been to either Lignières de Touraine or Saint Savin. We’ll have to go there. Lavardin is definitely worth a visit, along with Vendôme.
