The Old Post House – La vieille poste

33_vieille_poste_1We have often seen the old post house at Chouzy sur Cisse from the highway along the Loire when driving from Amboise to Blois, but have never been able to get a closer look because it’s on a sharp turn on the road. Today we were walking along the path between the road and the Loire. Above is the first view of what we think is a 17th to 18th century house. It’s extremely elaborate for a post house.
We clambered up the slope to the road and crossed over. We were able to take a closer look of the property which consists of several buildings (below). A sign on the side says “La Vieille Poste” but although we’ve searched it on google we haven’t found a description of the building itself although it appears to be the headquarters of an artistic society.

What a fab looking place! A couple of months ago I found an academic paper in Persée on the history of the post office in France. Really interesting. In the early days a surprising number of post offices were run by women, the widows of postmasters who had inherited their postion. They were formidible creatures by all accounts.

I think actually that this was a coaching inn type post house – I should have been more specific. I’ll have to look into the history of the post office here. There is another one at the top end of our street which is now a B&B.
