Castel Macé – Le Castel de Macé

This original piece of architecture in the village of Macé has an interesting history. Pierre Hague bought the property in 1874 and made significant alterations. He added a belvedere formed by a dome made from 4 curvel panels, topped by a skylight surrounded by a circular balcony and covered with a copper roof in the shape of an onion dome.
Pierre Hague was both an artist and an eccentric. He took part in the Algerian military campaign of 1843 under the Duke of Aumel (4^th son of Louis-Philippe). The turret was no doubt inspired by North African architectutre.
He commissioned the sculpted door below which is a reproduction of one of the doors in the François I wing of Blois Castle (note the salamander). It is typical of the neo-renaissance style of the Castel. The Latin inscription carved in pink marble beneath the lintel reads “Tandem quiesco”  – Peace at last.
Cette construction avec son architecture originale se trouve dans le village de Macé. Son histoire est intéressante. Pierre Hague achète la propriété en 1874, la transforme et y ajoute un belvédère formé d’un dôme à 4 pans arrondis, coiffé d’un lanterneau entouré d’une balustrade et surmonté d’un toit en cuivre en forme de bulbe.
Artiste et homme très original, il avait fait les campagnes d’Algérie (1843) avec le duc d’Aumale (4^ème fils de Louis-Philippe). Ce belvédère a sans doute été inspiré par l’architecture d’Afrique du Nord.
Il fait ouvrir la porte « sculptée » ci-contre. Elle reproduit l’une des portes de l’aile François Ier du château de Blois (remarquez le salamandre) et représente le style neo-renaissance de la maison. Sous son linteau est inscrite sur un marbre rose la devise latine « Tandem quiesco » – Enfin je me repose.
