Postcard #21 – Rural houses in Poland

18120_thatched_roofWhen cycling around the Polish countryside, we’ve seen a lot of old timber houses but the roofs are always fibre cement, flat iron and occasionally currugated iron which obviously can’t be the original material. Today we visited a very interesting outdoor museum near Opole on our way from Krakow to Wroclaw and we were able to satisfy our curiosity. Most of the houses were 19th century but a few were late 18th century. The roofs are either thatched with grain thatching or wooden. The little building on the left is a reconstructed cellar. It was 30°C outside today and very cool inside the little stone building. The little structures in the last photo are beehives.
