Catkins – Chatons

47_hazelnut_treeAnother sign of spring – catkins, the hazelnut flower which appears in early spring.
Un autre signe du printemps : les chatons, les fleurs du noisetier qui éclosent tout au début du printemps.

I have always called them ‘lambstails’ as they wriggle more like a young lamb’s tail when getting fed by mum. Both are about this time of the year.

Thank you, Lesley. I had no idea they could be called lambs tails as well. I agree that the resemblance is closer than a cat’s tail. We have a hazelnut tree that we grew from a cutting and this is the first time I’ve really noticed the flowers. This year was also the first time we got a good crop of hazelnuts.
