Ravenna is famous for its Byzantine mosaics and we visited all the city’s most important monuments but I think my favourite was the Basilica of Saint Apollinaire in Classe, about 5 km outside the town and on the bike route. It was consecrated in 549.

Exquisite.
The colours are wonderful to see after all the years – so much better than if just painted!
I remembered everything from our first magical visit to Ravenna. The colors are stunning.
The exterior looks so clean and modern. Has there been a lot of restoration of late?
This is how I remember Ravenna from many many years ago. The north of Italy in the Po Valley is very rich.
