Coal Tits & Daffodils – Mésanges charbonnières et jonquilles

52_tits_daffodilsI can’t keep away from this window at the moment. I wish it was my office window and not the kitchen!

Al Fresco in Blois – Manger en terrasse à Blois

51_alfresco_bloisIn the end, I did get up on Saturday morning to go to the market. The sun came out but I don’t think it would have been more than 10°C at lunchtime. I’m sure some of these tables on Place Louis XII were taken though! Today it is grey and miserable again …

A Holy Place – Une place sacrée

48_holy_placeNo, the sun did not shine today and the sky was not blue but I couldn’t bare taking  another grey photo so I used this one that I took last week when we were having our thermos of tea and biscuits in La Chaussée Saint Victor looking at the spire of the church of the same name that you can see closer up below.

Catkins – Chatons

47_hazelnut_treeAnother sign of spring – catkins, the hazelnut flower which appears in early spring.

46_yellow_white_greyNot quite so grey today, but just look at those lovely daffodils and snowdrops. Thank you to Monique and Jacky, the previous owners of our lovely 400-year-old house, for planting this wonderful carpet.

A Grey Day – Une journée grise

45_grey_day
A bright sunny weekend that we couldn’t make the most of, followed by an excessively grey day. Oh for spring!

The Market Square – La place du marché

45_market_square
Today we had a thick mist until well after lunch, then it cleared and the sun came out. This is the market square in Blois late afternoon, with just a few people walking about. Tomorrow morning it will be a different scene.

The Zouave – Le zouave

44_zouaveAround 1870, Baron de Graëb had a wooden Bedouin made to commemorate the visit of Abd-el-Kader, a prison-of-war on his way to Amboise.
The Baron had the sculpture put up on the roof of an old windmill he owned just outside the village of La Chaussée-Saint-Victor, on the road to Paris, so that visitors from the capital would recognise the turn-off to his house. The silhouette soon became familiar to the locals.
It didn’t take long to deteriorate, however, and was replaced in 1892 by a Zouave made by Amédée Charron, a sculpter from nearby Saint-Denis-sur-Loire. In January 1941, after the bombings, the Zouave had to be taken down, because part of his head was gone.
In 1948, after acquiring a new head sculpted by Madame Berger-Thibault, the daughter of Adrien Thibault, a well-known ceramic artist living in La Chaussée-Saint-Victor, the Zouave was exhibited in front of her museum up until 1987. It was then taken down and kept in storage, very delapidated after spending so many years in the open.
In 1999, the local association of history and popular traditions restored it.
Since then, it has been on show in the foyer of the town hall in La Chaussée-Saint-Victor, which is now its official custodien.

42_roofs_chmineys
Today, we went walking at La Chaussée Saint Victor, a town to the north-east of Blois. We really like these roofs seen from above. The following photo shows the front of the manor house which belongs to the municipality. However, I was not able to find out any more about it.
