We have quite accidentally found ourselves in the Valley of the Beautiful Women just outside the town of Eger in Hungary. The two dozen or so cellars carved into rock have made it a popular wine-tasting area and attracted over two hundred wine-sellers. The most well-known wine and the ruby-red Bull’s Blood or a number of rather sour whites: leányka, olaszrizling and hárslevelű from nearby Debrő. It was rather daunting knowing what to taste but we finally ended up at a cellar called Ostorosbor where we chose a white called Egri Csillag and the famous Bull’s Blood (Egri Bikaver).
Nous nous sommes retrouvés tout à fait par hasard dans la Vallée des Dames juste à côté de la ville d’Eger en Hongrie. La vingtaine de caves taillée dans la roche en ont fait un lieu de dégustation recherché et maintenant il y a plus de 200 revendeurs. Les vins les plus connus sont le “sang du taureau” avec sa robe rubis foncée et quelques blancs plutôt acides : eányka, olaszrizling et hárslevelű qui proviennent de la région voisine de Debrő. Le nombre de revendeurs était plutôt décourageant mais nous avons fini par trouver un vigneron qui s’appelle Ostorosbor où nous avons choisi un blanc, Egri Csillag, et le fameux sang du taureau (Egri Bikaver).

We cycled up to this hilltop church in Slovenia, overlooking Maribor, . Built in the 16th century, it was abandoned between 1784 and 1855. It was restored in 1860.
Nous avons grimpé en vélo jusqu’à cette église qui surplombe Maribor en Slovénie. Construite au 16ème siècle, elle fut abandonnée entre 1784 et 1855 avant d’être restaurée en 1860.
When we were riding along the Drava River in Maribor today, we saw this old raft. Just after it, we saw a new one, then we saw the sign explaining the tradition of timber rafting that dates back to at least 1280. The Drava was once the main transport link between Austria, Croatia and Serbia. Maribor was the first river port for rafters and was used as a stopover before continuing their journey.
Every year since 1984, a new raft is built or an old one restored by the local woodwork school. New artisans are baptised as part of a major traditional event in the city of Malibor. This year, the 30th international meeting of European timber raftsmen will be held from 22 to 25 June.
Lorsque nous faisions du vélo le long de la Drava à Maribor aujourd’hui nous avons vu ce vieux radeau. Juste après, nous avons vu un nouveau radeau ainsi qu’un panneau qui explique la tradition des radeaux en bois qui date d’avant 1280. La Drava était autrefois le lien principal de transport entre l’Autriche, la Croatie et la Serbie. Maribor était le premier port fluvial pour les radeleurs et servait de halte avant de continuer leur voyage.
Tous les ans depuis 1984, un nouveau radeau est construit ou un ancien restauré par l’école de menuiserie locale. Les nouveaux artisans sont baptisés lors d’un événement majeur du calendrier de Maribor. Cette année aura lieu la 30ème rencontre internationale des radeleurs d’Europe du 22 au 25 juin.
This Žametovka” or “Modra Kavčina” vine is is said to be the oldest vine in the world, planted 400 years ago just before the Ottoman invasion. It has survived war and fire and bombing by the Allied forced in World War II. With a yearly harvest of 35 to 55 kg of grapes, it fills about 100 x 25 cl bottles a year. We went to Macka Café next door and waiting out a heavy fall of rain drinking some local wine with a toasted ham and cheeses sandwich. A glass of water is always served with a glass of wine.

Il a survécu des guerres et des incendies y compris les bombardements des alliés pendant la deuxième guerre mondiale. Avec une vendange annuelle de 35 à 55 kg de raisins, il remplit environ 100 bouteilles de 25 centilitres. Nous sommes allés au café Macka à côté pour attendre la fin d’une grosse ondée en sirotant du vin local accompagné d’un croque monsieur. Un verre d’eau est toujours servie avec le vin.
Today we went in the other direction on the cycle route between Iseo Lake and Brescia to visit the delightful little town of Brescia with its broad spectrum of architecture. Here, you can see the 15th century side of Piazza de la Loggia. The second photo was taken in a pasticceria en route at Paderno Franciacorta. Jean Michel is reading the local newspaper in Italian, under the Empire State Building, drinking cappuccino and eating a pain aux raisin. Tomorrow we’re changing countries.
Nous sommes partis dans le sens opposé aujourd’hui sur l’itinéraire vélo entre le lac Iseo et Brescia pour visiter cette jolie ville à l’architecture bien hétéroclite : ici on voit la partie XVe de la Piazza de la Loggia. La deuxième photo est prise dans une pâtisserie en route à Paderno Franciacorta : Jean Michel lit le journal local en Italien, sous l’Empire State Building, en dégustant un cappuccino et un pain aux raisins. Demain nous changeons de pays.
Clusane del Lago is on Lake Iseo, the smallest of the northern Italian lakes. We saw the restaurant as we were riding towards our destination of Paratica 5 k further along the lake and booked a table for the way back. The view was stunning! Jean Michel ordered fried lake fish while I had a delicious scalloppina al limone followed by tiramisu. We had a carafe of local frizzante. The return trip was 25 K and we just made it before dark.
Clusane del Lago se trouve sur le lac Iseo, le plus petit des lacs italiens du nord. Séduit par ce restaurant en nous rendant en vélo à notre destination de Paratica à cinq kilomètres plus loin sur le bord du lac nous avons réservé une table pour le retour. La vue était imprenable ! Jean Michel a choisi des poissons frits du lac alors que j’ai dégusté une excellente scalloppina al limone suivi d’un tisamisu. Il nous restait encore 25 kilomètres pour retourner à notre location. Nous sommes arrivés juste avant la tombée de la nuit !
We have been so busy getting ready to go on our one-month cycling holiday to Romania that I nearly forgot City Daily Photo theme day. We said goodby to our garden today. I’ll post a photo of the same corner of our house on July 1st. In the meantime, I hope you’ll follow us across Europe, starting with Italy tomorrow.
