I always love the view of Blois when we reach the last bend in the Loire particularly on a sunny day.

Not many stalls at the first market of the year, but a bright blue sky. You can see the Robert Houdin House of Magic behind. Note the colour of the coats – black, brown beige and red!

These prehistoric antlers from a cervus megaceros, ancestor of the elk, are at the top of the Grand Staircase in Château de Cheverny. Found in the icy regions of Siberia two centuries ago, the antlers are more than 6000 years old. They were a gift to the collector, Paul, Marquis of Vibraye, in the 19th century.
Ce bois préhistorique de plus de 6000 ans (issue d’un cervus megaceros, ancêtre de l’élan), trouvé dans les glaces de Sibérie il y a 200 ans, se trouve en haut de l’escalier d’honneur au château de Cheverny. Il s’agit d’un cadeau offert au collectionneur Paul, marquis de la Vibraye, au xixe siècle.
There is a golf course along the Loire between Blois and Amboise. From the road, we could see trees where the mistletoe was low enough to pick easily. When we got there, we found three freshly cut branches on the ground. Someone else must have had the same idea as us! In the Middle Ages in France, mistletoe was was given to friends at the beginning of the new year with the wish Au gui l’an neuf which is the corruption of an earlier Celtic expression meaning “may the wheat germinate”. It was later replaced by bon an, mal an, Dieu soit céans (good year, bad year, may God be with you) and in the 20th century by bonne et heureuse année ([have a] good and happy year).
Sur la route le long de la Loire entre Blois et Amboise il y a un golf. On voyait de la route des arbres où le gui semblait pousser assez bas pour le cueillir. En arrivant sur place, on a trouvé par terre trois branches nouvellement coupées. Quelqu’un d’autre a dû avoir la même idée que nous! Au moyen âge on offrait le gui avec ce souhait: “Au gui l’an neuf”, qui provenait d’une expression celte (o ghel an heu) voulant dire “que le blé germe”. Ces paroles ont été replacées plus tard par “bon an, mal an, Dieu soit céans et, au XX” siècle par “bonne et heureuse année”.
We were delighted to discover that we could buy our favourite Italian delicacies on the market in Blois on Thursday and Saturday. The most senior of these three lovely ladies had come to buy goodies from her daughter and grand-daughter. These beautiful painted shutters are to be found in the Arms Room in Château de Cheverny. Just 20 km south-east of Blois, the domain has been in the same family for six centuries and open to the public since 1922. The château as it stands today was built between 1624 and 1640 by Count Henri Hurault and his wife Marguerite Gaillard de la Marinière. The sumptuous interior decoration is by Jean Monier from Blois. It is the only major château in the Loire to have retained its original furniture.
Ces beaux volets peints se trouvent dans la salle des Armes au château de Cheverny. Situé à 20 km au sud-est de Blois, le domaine appartient à la même famille depuis six siècles. Il est ouvert au public depuis 1922. Le château actuel fut construit entre 1624 et 1640 par le comte Henri Hurault et sa femme Marguérite Gaillard de la Marinière. La décoration somptueuse intérieure est l’oeuvre de Jean Monier de Blois. C’est le seul château majeure dans la vallée de la Loire qui a conservé son mobilier d’origine.
I shouldn’t have been surprised to see Molière in Chambord because he was a favourite of Louis XIV. In 1670, the Sun King invited France’s most popular playright of all times to stay in Chambord with his troup where he wrote the ballet comedy, Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme known in English as The Bourgeois Gentleman).
Je n’aurais pas dû être surprise de voir Molière à Chambord car il bénéficiait des faveurs de Louis XIV. En 1670, le roi soleil l’invite avec sa troupe à passer un mois au château de Chambord où il écrit la comédie-ballet Le Bourgeois gentilhomme.
Chambord, being a hunting lodge, boasts a very large number of antlers!
