16th century wayside chapel – Petite chapelle du 16ème siècle

  • We came across this lovely little stone chapel on our walk last Sunday. Built at the beginning of the 16th century, Saint Anthony’s chapel in Tavers. People came to pray here to have eye diseases and scrofula cured, to find lost objects and help women conceive.

Nous sommes tombés sur cette jolie petite chapelle en pierre lors de notre promenade dimanche dernier. La Chapelle de Saint Antoine se trouve à Tavers. On venait en pèlerinage pour guérir des maux des yeux.yeux, des écrouelles, pour retrouver des objets perdus et surtout guérir les femmes stériles.

Saint Paterne

I walked past this church on my way from the train station to the centre of Orleans and rather embarrassingly thought it was the back of the cathedral when Jean Michel pointed out that there are no towers. It’s actually the church of Saint Paterne and was destroyed twice by the people of Orléans during the Hundred Years War (in 1358 and 1428) because they thought the English might use it as a fortress. Next time I’ll go and have a look at the front.
Je suis passé devant cette église en me rendant de la gare au centre d’Orléans et je dois avoir à ma grande honte que je croyais que c’était l’arrière de la cathédrale jusqu’à ce que Jean Michel me dise qu’il n’y a pas de tours. En fait l’église de Saint Paterne construite au 16ème siècle et détruite deux fois au cours de la guerre de cent ans par les orléanais eux-mêmes (en 1358 et 1428), redoutant que les anglais n’utilisent le bâtiment comme place forte. La prochaine fois j’irai voir l’entrée principale.

Postcard from Istanbul – First Impressions

244_istanbul_day_oneYou may have noticed that I missed a couple of days – I was getting ready for a trip to Istanbul. Here we are and are enthralled. What a wonderful city! Here are just a few photos. The first is taken from the edge of the Bosphorous looking towards Galata Tower, the area we are staying in. The second is a spicem stall in the Egyptian Bazaar. The third is the Blue Mosque taken from outside Saint Sophia and the fourth is Saint Sophia which I found rather disappointing mainly due to the presence of scaffolding. The last photos are taken inside Saint Sophia.
Vous avez peut-être remarqué que j’ai manque deux ou trois jours, mais nous étions en train de préparer notre départ à Istanbul. Nous sommes bien arrivés et sont tombés sous le charme ! Quelle ville merveilleuse ! Voici quelques photos. La première est prise de la rive du Bosphore et regardant vers la tour de Galata, l’endroit où nous sommes herbergés. La deuxième est un vendeur d’épices au Bazar égyptien prise en face de Sainte Sophie. La quatrième est Sainte Sophie qui m’a un peu déçue peut-être à cause des échaffaudages. Les dernières photos montrent l’intérieur de l’église.

Souvigny en Sologne

211_souvigny_churchToday while cycling in Sologne, we came across the delightful little village of Souvigny with its 12th century church (Saint Martin’s) and beautifully restored houses (see below). It is located about 70 km from Blois.
Aujourd’hui en faisant du vélo en Sologne, nous sommes tombés sur le joli petit village de Souvigny avec son église du 12e siècle (Saint Martin) et ses belles maisons restaurées (voir ci-dessous). Le village se trouve à environ 70 km de Blois.

Postcard #14 – Wooden Churches, Maramures, Romania

165_barsana_outsideToday we visited a large number of wooden churches in the Maramures region in the north of Romania, most of which were built in the 16th century entirely of wood, including the roof. They are often hidden among trees up above the village and surrounded by graves of various shapes and sizes. Inside are wall paintings. Famous artists travelled around the area so some of the paintings are of excellent qualities while others are more primitive. In the last photo, the paintings are excecuted on a linen background.
Aujourd’hui nous avons visité un grand nombre d’églises en bois dans la région de Maramures dans le nord de la Roumanie. La plupart de ces églises étaient construites au 16ième siècle, entièrement en bois, y compris le toit. Elles sont souvent cachées parmi des arbres dans les hauteurs du village et entourées de tombes de toute taille et type. A l’intérieur se trouvent des peintures murales. Des artistes célèbres se promenaient dans la région et certaines peintures sont d’excellente qualité tandis que d’autres sont plus primitves. Les peintures dans la dernière photo sont exécutées sur lin.

Postcard #11 – Voronet Manastiria

155_volonet_1We arrived at Voronet Monastery in Bucovina at the end of the day which meant very few people and excellent light. Built in 1488 by Stefan cel Mare, the church is known as the Sistine Chapel of the East. It is one of the 11 monasteries in the area listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The little cemetery opposite is a real flower garden. The whole experience was very peaceful.
Nous sommes arrivés au monastère de Voronet en Bucovine en fin de journée ce qui nous a épargné les foules et nous a procuré une excellente lumière. Construite en 1488 par Stefan cel Mare (Etienne le Grand), l’église est surnommée la chapelle Sixtine de l’est. C’est l’un des onze monastères inscrits sur la liste du Patrimoine Mondial de l’UNESCO. Le petit cimetière en face est un véritable jardin fleuri. Nous avons ressenti un grand paix dans ce lieu.

Postcard #9 – Biertan Fortified Church – L'église fortifiée de Biertan

153_biertanTransylvania in Romania is known for its fortified churches. That of Biertan was buillt in the 12th century in the form of a hall-church in the late Gothic style. Between 1572 and 1857, it was the seat of Saxon episcopacy. The fortifications consist of 3 rows of exterior fortifications, 7 towers and 2 bastions. It was declared a World Heritage site in 1933.
La Transylvanie en Roumanie est connue pour ses églises fortifiées. Celle de Biertan a été édifiée au XIIième siècle sous la forme d’une église-halle dans le style gothique tardif.  Entre 1572 et 1867, elle a été le siège de l’épiscopat saxon. Les fortifications sont constituées de 3 rangs de murs de défense, 7 tours et 2 bastions. L’église a été inscrite au patrimoine de l’Unesco en 1933.

Postcard #5 – Saint Urban, Slovenia

13_hilltop_churchWe cycled up to this hilltop church in Slovenia, overlooking Maribor, . Built in the 16th century, it was abandoned between 1784 and 1855. It was restored in 1860.
Nous avons grimpé en vélo jusqu’à cette église qui surplombe Maribor en Slovénie. Construite au 16ème siècle, elle fut abandonnée entre 1784 et 1855 avant d’être restaurée en 1860.

Balloons are up! – Les mongolfières sont parties !

140_-ballons_onzain.As we cycled in Onzain this evening, we could see about a half a dozen air balloons. These ones seemed really closed. .
En arrivant à Onzain en vélo ce soir, nous pouvions voir une demie-douzaine de mongolfières. Celles-ci semblaient vraiment très proches.
