When I first saw this building in the northern suburbs of Blois, I thought it was covered in graffiti, then I realised it was an African take-away.
Lorsque j’ai vu ce bâtiment dans la banlieue nord de Blois, je pensais qu’il s’agissait de graffiti, puis je me suis rendu compte que c’était un restaurant africain avec des plats à emporter.

This photo was taken by our friend and neighbour Françoise Courtet this morning from her bedroom window with her iPhone. The deer was then joined by two others. Since they are very timorous it’s difficult to get any closer.
Cette photo était prise par notre amie voisine Françoise Courtet ce matin depuis la fenêtre de sa chambre avec son iPhone. Ensuite ce chevrueil était rejoint par deux autres. Comme ils sont très peureux il est difficile de sen ‘approcher plus.
Our very favourite pure butter home-made shortbread biscuits – Les Grouets Sablés – now have their own tin (small and large size) decorated with the Loire Valley châteaux. You can buy your own at the Louis XII market in Blois on a Saturday or Amboise market on a Sunday. Bon appétit!

House with a View – Maison avec vue
Blois was initially built on a hill. This house is at the top, with a view of the Loire below, seen in the following photo. I took both photos from the same place.
Au début, Blois fut construite sur une colline. Cette maison se trouve en haut de la crête, avec une vue de la Loire, comme on voit dans la photo suivante. J’ai pris les deux photos du même endroit.
The day before yesterday, I posted a photo taken halfway up the Renaissance staircase of Blois Royal Castle. Here you can see the staircase on the right and the Gaston d’Orléans wing, built between 1635 and 1638, in the middle. To quote the castle’s official website, it “is a chef d’oeuvre of French classical architecture : the main block with its central pavilllion, the sober and subtle treatment of the façades, the elevation with its three classical orders, the superposition of the triangular and rounded pediments all contribute to accentuate the verticality of the composition”.
Avant d’hier, j’ai posté une photo prise à mi-chemin sur l’escalier Renaissance du château royal de Blois. On voit de nouveau l’escalier à droite et l’aile Gaston d’Orléans, construite entre 1635 et 1638, bien au milieu. Pour citer le site officiel du château de Blois, c’est “un manifeste du classicisme français en architecture : pavillon central et ailes en retour, traitement plastique des murs subtil et sobre, élévation à trois niveaux d’ordres, superposition de deux frontons – triangulaire et en plein cintre – accentuant l’effet de verticalité”.
A little late for chandeleur admittedly, but this was the first opportunity after the flu to get together with our neighbours for crêpes and vouvray, the local natural sparkling wine. Chandeleur or, more popularly, “la fête des crèpes” is held on 2nd February, 40 days after Christmas. One explanation is that it celebrates the presentation of Christ at the temple of Jerusalem but it seems there are pagan origins as well. Its name derives from the expression “festa candelarum”or “candle day”. It seems there’s also a tradition of holding a coin in one hand while flipping the crèpe with the other that will guarantee prosperity for the coming year.
Oui, c’est un peu tard pour fêter le chandeleur mais c’était la première occasion (après la grippe !) pour nous retrouver avec nos amis voisins pour manger des crêpes accompagnées d’un verre de vouvray. Le Chandeleur (fête des chandelles du Latin “festa candelarum”) également appelé “la fête des crêpes”, est fixée au 2 février, soit 40 jours après Noël. Elle correspondrait à la présentation du Christ au temple mais elle aurait également des origines païennes. Il existe encore une tradition de tenir une pièce de monnaie à la main gauche en sautant les crêpes à la main droite afin de connaître la prospérité pendant toute l’année.
This photo is a follow-up to yesterday’s photo directing visitors to the different parts of Blois Castle. Taken halfway up the Renaissance staircase in the François I wing, it shows the Gaston d’Orléans wing on the right and the path leading to the terrasse overlooking the Loire on the left.

Depuis le premier palier de l’escalier renaissance de l’aile François I, on aperçoit l’aile Gaston d’Orléans à droite et le chemin qui mène à la terrasse surplombant la Loire à gauche.
The Royal Castle of Blois has so many different parts to it that this hexagon and compass rose, in the middle of court of honour is certainly not superfluous.
